Kashmir's summer capital and the starting point of most trips: Dal and Nigeen lakes, the Mughal gardens of Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi, and the old city around Jamia Masjid.

The city spreads around Dal and Nigeen lakes, with the Boulevard road running along the eastern shore. Most visitors arrive for the lake, but the old city on the western bank — the lanes around Jamia Masjid, the floating vegetable market, the Naqshbanda shrines — is where Srinagar has been living its own life for centuries.

The Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi) sit on the hillside above the eastern shore and are at their best in spring and autumn. Winters are cold and quiet; summers are crowded but the city is at its most alive.

Getting there

Fly into Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR), 12 km from the city centre. Taxis and pre-paid airport cabs are available outside arrivals. The Banihal–Banihal tunnel on NH-44 keeps the road open in winter when the Jawahar Tunnel route gets blocked.

No. Due to telecom regulations across Jammu & Kashmir, non-J&K prepaid mobile SIM cards are barred. Only postpaid SIMs (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) or local J&K prepaid SIMs function in Srinagar and throughout the valley.
What is the best time for a shikara ride on Dal Lake?
The early morning ride (6:00 AM – 7:30 AM) is best to catch the historic floating vegetable market and quiet, glass-like water. Late afternoon (5:00 PM – 6:30 PM) is best for sunset views and illuminated houseboats.
How do I travel from Srinagar Airport to Dal Lake or Lal Chowk?
Prepaid taxi counters operate right outside the arrival terminal with fixed government tariff rates (typically ₹800–₹1,000 to Boulevard Road depending on vehicle size). The 14 km drive takes 25–35 minutes.
Are Mughal gardens open on all days?
Yes, major Mughal gardens including Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi are open seven days a week from 9:00 AM until sunset. Entry fee is nominal (around ₹25–₹30 per person).
