Meadow of flowers & world’s highest ski cable car
A high meadow resort known for the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, and for skiing in winter. Tangmarg is the town below.
Gulmarg sits at 2,650m in a natural bowl ringed by firs and higher peaks. In winter it is one of the best ski destinations in South Asia — the Gondola reaches 3,980m (Phase 2) and the off-piste terrain above is vast and relatively uncrowded compared to European resorts.
In summer the snow melts to reveal wide meadows and a nine-hole golf course at 2,650m. The town itself is small — a line of hotels and shops on either side of the main road — but the landscape around it is the point. The Gondola queues can be long in peak season; go early or visit on weekdays.
50 km from Srinagar (about 2 hours). Drive to Tangmarg, then the last 13 km climbs steeply to Gulmarg. In heavy snowfall, 4WD with chains are required from Tangmarg.
Practical tips and local rules to help you plan your visit without surprises.
Outside taxis drop in town centers. Internal sightseeing points in Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and snow zones operate on registered local union cabs or ponies.
Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work due to telecom regulations. Carry a postpaid SIM (Jio, Airtel, or BSNL) for dependable mobile data and calling.
UPI and cards are accepted at major stays and restaurants. Keep cash on hand for high mountain passes, tea stalls, local boatmen, and pony rides.
Weather can shift quickly in the mountains. Pack layered clothing, a warm fleece or light down jacket for mornings and evenings, and sturdy walking shoes.
