Meadow of gold & Thajiwas Glacier gateway
On the road to Ladakh, with the Thajiwas glacier walk and the high Zojila pass beyond. Trips to Zero Point use Sonamarg's local taxis.
The "meadow of gold" sits at 2,730m on the Srinagar–Leh highway, with the Sindh river running past it and the Thajiwas glacier visible from town. Most day visitors take a local Sonamarg taxi to the glacier walk — a 4 km round trip on the moraine, accessible by pony or on foot.
Zero Point (4,091m) is further up the same road and requires local taxis and government permits. The season is roughly May to October; the highway closes at Zojila in winter. Sonamarg is also a popular overnight stop for Leh road-trippers.
80 km from Srinagar on the Srinagar–Leh highway via Ganderbal and Kangan. The drive follows the Sindh river for much of the way and takes about 2.5 hours.
Practical tips and local rules to help you plan your visit without surprises.
Outside taxis drop in town centers. Internal sightseeing points in Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and snow zones operate on registered local union cabs or ponies.
Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work due to telecom regulations. Carry a postpaid SIM (Jio, Airtel, or BSNL) for dependable mobile data and calling.
UPI and cards are accepted at major stays and restaurants. Keep cash on hand for high mountain passes, tea stalls, local boatmen, and pony rides.
Weather can shift quickly in the mountains. Pack layered clothing, a warm fleece or light down jacket for mornings and evenings, and sturdy walking shoes.
