A riverside town in the Lidder valley and base for Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. Local sightseeing runs on Pahalgam's union taxis.

Pahalgam sits where the Lidder and Sheshnag rivers meet, surrounded by pine forest and meadows. It is the base for Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari — all accessible by local Pahalgam union taxis from the stand in town. The town itself is a busy strip of hotels, shops and horse traders in summer; it quietens considerably after October.

The Lidder river runs right through and some of the riverside hotels are genuinely good. Note: outside taxis cannot go to Aru, Betaab, Baisaran or Chandanwari; you hire a local taxi at the union stand.

Getting there

95 km from Srinagar on NH-44, then branch at Anantnag. The drive takes 2.5–3 hours through the saffron fields of Pampore and the ruins at Avantipora.

Weather can shift quickly in the mountains. Pack layered clothing, a warm fleece or light down jacket for mornings and evenings, and sturdy walking shoes.
