Pahalgam's local taxis, explained
Why your Srinagar taxi can't take you to Aru or Betaab, and how to plan around it.

If you've booked a taxi from Srinagar to Pahalgam, you may be surprised to learn it can't take you to Aru Valley, Betaab Valley or Chandanwari. Here's why, and how to plan around it.
The rule
Sightseeing around Pahalgam is run by the town's local taxi union. Taxis from outside drop you in Pahalgam and wait there (or return), and you hire a local taxi at the Pahalgam stand for the valleys. The same applies to many travellers' favourite spots in Sonamarg, where Zero Point trips use Sonamarg's local taxis.
How to plan the day
- Leave Srinagar early - the drive takes about 2.5–3 hours.
- At the Pahalgam taxi stand, choose a package: Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are usually offered separately or as a combined circuit.
- Your Srinagar driver waits in town while you go with the local taxi.
Staying overnight
A night in Pahalgam makes the day far less rushed. Book a stay in Pahalgam and take a one-way taxi in, then book the return for the next afternoon.
