The lake at the heart of Srinagar, ringed by the Boulevard road and lined with houseboats. Early-morning shikara rides reach the floating vegetable market.

Dal is 18 square kilometres of connected water, most of it surprisingly shallow. The houseboat colony along the Boulevard has been here since the British era, when visitors weren't allowed to own land. The floating vegetable market operates from about 6 am on the western shore — worth an early shikara ride even if you aren't buying tomatoes.

In summer the lake surface fills with lotus; in winter some parts freeze. The Boulevard road that rings the eastern shore is chaotic and lively in season.

Getting there

Taxis and autos from Lal Chowk take 15–20 minutes to the Boulevard. Shikaras can be hired from most ghats on the Boulevard road.
