The fort on Hari Parbat hill has stood over Srinagar since the 18th century. It's a short drive from the Dal Lake Boulevard and the view from the top takes in both Dal and Nigeen lakes, the old city and the Zabarwan hills. The Makhdoom Sahib shrine and the almond orchard at the foot of the hill are worth a walk too.

Hari Parbat is a prominent hill rising 300 metres above Srinagar, topped by an 18th-century fort built by Afghan governor Ata Mohammad Khan. The fort is visible from much of the city and the view from the top takes in both Dal and Nigeen lakes, the Boulevard, the old city and the Zabarwan hills. The Makhdoom Sahib shrine partway up is an active pilgrimage site.

The Durrani fort walls around the base of the hill enclose an almond orchard — worth walking through in spring. Entry to the fort itself requires a ticket and is organised through the ASI.

Getting there

3 km from the Dal Lake Boulevard. Drive to the fort gate near Kathi Darwaza; the climb from there is on foot.
