Staying on a houseboat is one of the things people remember most about Kashmir. It isn't for everyone, though. Here's how to choose.

Why a houseboat

  • Carved cedar interiors and a long tradition of hosting - many boats have been run by the same family for generations.
  • Waking up on the water, with shikaras passing at dawn.
  • Meals are usually included, and hosts often arrange shikara transfers.

Why a hotel

  • More space, lifts and modern bathrooms; easier for elderly travellers or anyone with limited mobility.
  • Direct road access - no shikara needed with luggage at night.
  • More choice of location, from the Boulevard to the quieter areas near the gardens.

Dal or Nigeen?

Dal Lake is lively and central, close to the Boulevard. Nigeen Lake is quieter, with calmer water and many well-kept boats. Both are easy to reach from the airport.

A good compromise

Spend one or two nights on a houseboat at the start or end of your trip, and use hotels in the valleys. Browse houseboats and hotels in Srinagar.
