Wular is one of Asia's largest freshwater lakes, covering up to 200 sq km in flood season (it shrinks significantly in autumn and winter). It sits in Bandipora district, 60 km north of Srinagar, and the local fishing communities have worked it for centuries. Migratory birds arrive from October — Siberian ducks, geese and pochards in large numbers.
The drive up from Srinagar through Sopore passes apple and walnut orchards. Boating can be arranged through local fishermen at the shore.
Getting there
60 km from Srinagar via Pattan and Bandipora. About 1.5 hours by road. No fixed tourist infrastructure; negotiate boat hire with local fishermen at the shore.
