Naranag is a tiny village in Ganderbal district with 8th-century temple ruins at its edge and a classic two-day trek to the twin lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol above the tree line. The trail is well-marked and passes through pine and fir forest before reaching the open alpine zone.

Naranag is a small village in Ganderbal district at 2,400m with two things that make it worth the drive: a set of 8th-century Hindu temple ruins at the edge of the forest, and a trailhead for the Gangabal lake trek. The temple ruins (dedicated to Shiva) are substantial — carved stone columns and walls still standing — and the setting at the foot of the mountains is dramatic.

The Gangabal trek (2 days to the twin lakes, returning same way or via Sonamarg) is one of Kashmir's most rewarding.

Getting there

55 km from Srinagar via Ganderbal and Kangan (turn left before Kangan). About 2 hours by road. The last section is on a rough track.
