Renting a bike in Srinagar: documents, deposits and checks
What to carry, which bike to choose, and the five-minute check before you ride off.

Riding through Kashmir on a Royal Enfield is a classic trip. Renting in Srinagar is easy if you sort out three things first: documents, deposit and the bike's condition.
Documents
- A valid driving licence for motorcycles (MCWG or equivalent). An international driving permit with your home licence if you're visiting from abroad.
- An original photo ID. Providers usually keep a copy, not the original.
Deposit and what's included
Most providers take a refundable security deposit at pickup. Each listing shows the amount, how many helmets come with the bike, the free kilometres per day and whether hotel delivery is available. Check if riding gear (jackets, gloves, knee guards) is offered.
Which bike?
- Himalayan 450: built for rough roads and long distances; best for Gurez or rides towards Ladakh.
- Classic 350 / Bullet 350: comfortable for valley rides like Pahalgam and Sonamarg.
- Scooters (Activa, Jupiter): perfect for getting around Srinagar.
Before you ride off
- Walk around the bike and photograph any scratches with the provider present.
- Check brakes, tyres, horn and lights.
- Note the fuel level and the agreed fuel policy.
- Save the provider's phone number for breakdowns.
