What a Kashmir trip costs, and where the money goes
Taxis, stays and activities are the big three. How to build a realistic budget for your dates.

What a Kashmir trip costs depends on three choices: how you get around, where you stay and when you travel. This guide explains where the money goes so you can build a realistic budget. For current prices, use the live listings - providers set their own rates and they change with the season.
The big three costs
1. Getting around
Taxis are the biggest variable. Fares depend on the vehicle (sedan, Innova, Tempo Traveller), the trip type (one way, same-day round trip, or a night halt) and the season. Groups of four or more often save by sharing an Innova rather than taking two sedans. Compare fares on our taxi routes.
2. Where you stay
Houseboats usually include meals, which makes them better value than they first look. Hotel prices in Gulmarg and Pahalgam rise sharply in peak season and on holiday weekends.
3. Activities
The Gulmarg Gondola, pony rides, local union taxis in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and shikara rides are paid separately. Budget for these on top of your taxi fares.
Peak and off-peak
- Peak: April–June, the Christmas–New Year weeks, and long weekends.
- Good value: September–November, and January–February outside holidays.
Ways to keep costs down
- Stay in a valley overnight instead of doing long same-day round trips.
- Pay an advance online where providers allow it, and keep the rest for pickup.
- Book requests early in peak season - popular houseboats and Innovas go first.
